New York, NY – Thang Dao’s latest creation, “Nevermore,” commissioned by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and based in New York, merges the western narrative of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” with the eastern folklore of “The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.” The two narratives are interwoven, highlighting a shared human experience rather than a distinct and separate one. Dao’s “Nevermore” offers a message of hope and healing encouraging audience to find comfort in our shared human experience, ultimately leading to a greater sense of connection and humanity.

This unique production offers an entry for cultures to access one another. Poe’s classic poem offers a universal human experience of loss and death, while the folklore offers a ritual–way to process grief through memory and hope. This juxtaposition of narratives creates a powerful and poignant fusion that will resonate with audiences of all backgrounds.

The production also features an enchanting element of the folklore, where on the 7th day and of the 7th month, the birds leave earth to form a bridge for the lovers to unite for one day out of the whole year. This beautiful symbol of love and perseverance is a perfect complement to Poe’s narrative of grief and loss.
